NGV price up 51 satang this weekend

PTT will increase the pump price of compressed natural gas for vehicles (NGV) by 51 satang per kilogramme on Sept 16, chief operating officer Wirat Uanarumit said on Tuesday.

The new retail price at PTT outlets will be 13.70 baht per kilogramme from Saturday morning, a price that better reflected the actual cost, he said.

Public transport operators currently receiving a state NGV subsidy, allowing them to buy at 10 baht/kg for up to 10,000 baht per car per month, will continue to enjoy the privilege, he said.

Public passenger buses receive the NGV price subsidy for purchases of up to 40,000 baht per month per verhicle, he said. As of July, a total of 84,788 discount coupons given to these public transport operators had been used.

“Although PTT will still incur losses even after this NGV price adjustment, the new price will be much closer to the real cost, which should help cut the burden of state subsidies on the NGV price,” he said.

A study is being conducted to decide whether the NGV-price subsidy for public transport operators should continue, or what changes might be needed.

A similar study is also being made for the price subsidy programme on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for shops, food stalls and street vendors, whose businesses rely on use of cooking gas, he said.

PTT wants to raise the LPG price much closer to its actual cost, he said.
