NFL Week 3: How to survive and advance in your knockout pool

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Another week, another easy advance. The Houston Texans had the Jacksonville Jaguars all the way … funny, not. Talk about stressful. First, the Eagles fall behind 17-0 in Week 1 and then the Texans have to survive a late 2-point conversion attempt. Let’s hope this week creates some calm.

Don’t even think about it

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

The first game of the week is an AFC South class between Jacksonville and Tennessee. The Jaguars are 0-2 but not awful. Tennessee is always a risk. stay away. The Falcons visit the Colts. Indy plays tight games and Atlanta showed some spark in outlasting Philly. Better options are out there. The Rams are at the Browns. This is one to watch and not get anywhere near. The same can be said for the Texans at the Chargers. Carolina goes to Arizona.  The Panthers are unpredictable and not worth the risk at any point, especially with Cam Newton not at practice on Tuesday. Are you going to take a risk on which Minnesota team shows up? The one that pounded the Falcons or the one that struggled against the Packers. Kirk Cousins is not Patrick Mahomes. The Raiders may be more than a TD underdog but given the Vikings’ unsettled play it is not worth the risk. Baltimore at Kansas City means Patrick Mahomes against Lamar Jackson. Seems like the perfect time to kick back and enjoy a game rather than get involved in any way.

The Packers play host to the Broncos. Green Bay is off to a 2-0 start and Denver is an unlucky 0-2 after its brutal loss to Chicago. Aaron Rodgers & Co. are tempting but Vic Fangio knows how to defense the Packers. Time to be careful and avoid. The Steelers are more than a TD underdog at the Niners. Seriously? On what planet did SF suddenly become such a force after going 12-36 in its last three seasons. Daniel Jones starts for the Giants and that makes Tampa look like a good pick. Let’s remember, this is Jameis Winston, who is capable of throwing picks against any team. Um, pass. Teddy Bridgewater is the starter in New Orleans and he draws a tough game at Seattle. Not worth the risk no matter how tempting the Seahawks look.

Tempting fate

The Bears are a tick away from 0-2, which is what Washington is coming into the Week 3 matchup. Chicago’s offense is struggling. Washington actually can move the ball. Don’t be lured into taking the Bears. Buffalo looks to improve to 3-0 against an 0-2 Cincinnati team that was punished at home by San Francisco. The Bills would seem to merit strong consideration. However, they have the Patriots at home next week and this smacks of the lookahead game that traps teams. Detroit comes into Philly off a good win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Eagles are 1-1 and could be 2-0 or 0-2 if a couple plays went either way. Definitely haven’t seen Philly in flight yet so be careful.

Go for it

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

This comes down to a pair of games that have to have people salivating. Dallas plays host to Miami and New England welcomes Luke Falk and the New York Jets. Both the Cowboys and Pats are gigantic favorites. You can’t go wrong … right? The choice is Dallas. The Dolphins have no weapons on either side of the ball. The Jets do  have Le’Veon Bell. Don’t expect any Pete Stoyanovich and Leon Lett miracles to save Miami from another brutal beating.
