NFL to vote on proposed changes to onside kick rules soon

The NFL is scheduled to vote on more rules change proposals for the 2020 NFL season a week from now on Thursday, May 28 in a virtual league meeting.

According to numerous reports, one of the changes that has garnered a lot of support recently is a rule that would provide teams an alternative to the onside kick. The rule was originally proposed by the Philadelphia Eagles and suggests that teams would be provided an alternative opportunity to maintain possession of the football. Instead of the onside kick, they’d be allowed to opt to convert a fourth-and-15 from the kicking team’s 25-yard line.

There have been some amendments to the rule since it was first submitted by the Eagles. As noted by NFL.com columnist Judy Battista, teams would only be permitted to use the new fourth-and-15 scenario twice per game. It appears that teams would still have the option to do the onside kick as well if they so desired. It also sounds like the league could be implementing measures to take away the surprise element of the onside kick with this rule.

The idea of giving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense to convert on a fourth-and-15 is an exciting one.
