NFL suspends Cowboys' Terrance Williams 3 games

FRISCO, Texas _ The NFL has suspended Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams for three games without pay for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

The suspension stems from Williams' arrest last May by the Frisco police department for misdemeanor public intoxication.

A suspension for that offense is normally 1 or 2 games, if any by the NFL.

But Williams got three games because the NFL believes he escaped a more serious change of driving while intoxicated after fleeing the scene after hitting a light pole in his Lamborghini.

After arriving at the accident, police went to Williams' house where they found him riding a motorized scooter in the road and subsequently arrested him for public intoxication.

Williams' misdemeanor public intoxication charge was dismissed after he attended s an alcohol-awareness course and paid the city of Frisco for property damage caused to the light pole.

The suspension was expected by Williams and the Cowboys. It's one reason the team signed receiver Brice Butler to the roster Sept. 20.

And it's mitigated some because Williams is on injured reserve due to re-aggravation on his surgically-paired right foot.

He will be allowed to serve the suspension while on injured reserve.

He is eligible to return for the Dec. 9 game at Philadelphia.

The suspension does void the guarantees in Williams' contract, meaning the Cowboys can cut and not have to pay the remainder of his $3.5 million base salary.

Williams had two catches for 18 yards in the first three games this season and played only 39 snaps.
