The NFL suspended Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw through at least next season _ more than a yearlong ban _ after its investigation concluded that he bet on league games earlier this season.
Shaw played for the Chiefs in 2018, appearing in four games, most notably allowing a crucial catch to Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski to set up a game-winning field goal in New England.
Shaw is currently on injured reserve with the Cardinals.
"The continued success of the NFL depends directly on each of us doing everything necessary to safeguard the integrity of the game and the reputations of all who participate in the league," league Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances. If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football."
In a news release, the NFL said it uncovered no evidence that Shaw used inside information to place his bets. It did not say whether he bet on games involving own team, but evidence suggested his teammates and coaches were unaware he was gambling on NFL games.
Shaw has three days to appeal the suspension. As it stands, he may petition the league for reinstatement on Feb. 15, 2021.
