NFL sent officials to test new playing surface at Estadio Azteca

The NFL and Estadio Azteca are working together to take every precaution in order to ensure they don’t have to move another game from Mexico City.

Last season, the NFL had to move the Chiefs vs. Rams Week 11 game back to Los Angeles because the conditions of the artificial playing surface were deemed unfit for play. This ultimately led to the decision by Estadio Azteca officials to install a natural playing surface.

This process has been in the works for a while now, in coordination with consultants from World Sports Turf, with the goal of bringing the best quality playing surface for NFL games, soccer matches and other events held at Estadio Azteca.

The process to update the field began in early June and has since been completed. According to turf consultant, Renato Luis Lauretti, the NFL recently sent officials to Estadio Azteca in order to test the playing surface. The field was ultimately approved by those testing the surface.

The Chiefs are scheduled to go back to Mexico City to face the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019. It appears from the photos above that they won’t have any problems with the playing surface at Estadio Azteca this season.

This should help put some hesitant minds at ease about the potential of traveling back to Mexico City for the 2019 game. The last time around, many fans couldn’t change their travel arrangements and ended up stuck in Mexico City, unable to attend the Chiefs vs. Rams game, which was moved to the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The Chiefs and Chargers face off in Mexico City during Week 11 of the 2019 season.
