NFL rule change: Pass interference and non-calls now reviewable

The NFL owners approved a number of rule changes at the league meetings in Phoenix but one, in particular, should have a big impact this year.

Following a vote on Tuesday evening, offensive and defensive pass interference, including non-calls, are now subject to review.

Coaches are allowed to challenge in the first 28 minutes of each half, but the final two minutes are subject to booth review only.

This rule change, however, will only be in effect for the 2019 season.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Bengals were the only team to vote against the proposal, which passed 31-1.

“I personally believe it was the fact that every club wanted to get, and the league wanted to get these plays right,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said at his press conference following the vote. “Replay is to get it right. And ultimately people compromised, I think, on long-held views because they want to get the system right. They want to get the play right.”

Despite the rule change, coaches will still only have two challenge flags.

The video below provides a more in-depth look at the rule change.
