NFL refused to review Marvin Jones being tackled on the Hail Mary

If you watched Sunday’s game between the Lions and Chiefs closely, you surely saw it. Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones was tackled by Chiefs safety Daniel Sorenson as he turned to locate Matthew Stafford’s Hail Mary pass at the end of the 34-30 Chiefs win in Detroit.

It was plainly obvious in watching the game film. The still photos are even more incriminating of Sorensen committing obvious illegal contact, if nothing else…

Officials tend to bury their flag-throwing instincts on Hail Marys, but this was an egregious example of the defense getting an unfair advantage on a game-deciding play. Even more frustrating, the NFL officiating was aware of the obvious infraction but consciously chose not to review the play.

From Pro Football Talk:

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, NFL senior V.P. of officiating Al Riveron looked at the play but decided not to conduct a full-blown replay review.

There is no guarantee the Lions would have scored with another shot, but it’s pretty clear the play here merited at least getting one. The NFL thought otherwise.
