NFL practice squad rules: What players are eligible?

After submitting 53-man rosters on Saturday afternoon, NFL teams will begin building 10-man practice squads on Sunday morning. So what are the rules for practice squads?

All players with fewer than two accrued seasons in the NFL are eligible for practice squads. A player has to dress for six games to have it count as an accrued season. Players can’t be on a practice squad for more than three years.

Teams can have up to four players with two accrued seasons in the NFL on their practice squad. While on the practice squad, players are not eligible to dress for games during the season.

A player can be activated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, though, so long as the team makes a corresponding roster move to make room for that player on the active roster.

NFL teams are also allowed to sign players off another team’s practice squad to their own active roster. The minimum salary for practice squad players is $8,000 per week but some players earn much more than that.

The list of players cut by the Broncos on Saturday that are eligible for the practice squad includes fullback George Aston, offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, wide receiver Trinity Benson, linebacker Keishawn Bierria, safety/linebacker Jamal Carter, linebacker Joe Dineen, offensive lineman Sam Jones, running back Khalfani Muhammad, quarterback Brett Rypien and running back David Williams.
