NFL playoffs: 5 incredible postseason comebacks

The Kansas City Chiefs had been a victim of an amazing comeback when the Indianapolis Colts stunned them in 2014. The fans of Houston have to wonder what they did to deserve this … twice. First, the Oilers were rocked by the Bills in 1993. And on Sunday, the Chiefs overcame a 24-0 deficit to jar the Texans, 51-31. The Chiefs advance to the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 19, where they will play the Tennessee Titans, who used to be … the Houston Oilers.

What has become known as “The Frank Reich Game,” saw the Bills fall behind the Houston Oilers, 28-3 at halftime on Jan. 3, 1993. Houston built the advantage to 32 points before momentum changed … and did it ever. The Bills charged back to take 38-35 lead only to see the Oilers come back to tie the game. Could they suffer doom, after all? No, as Steve Christie kicked a field goal in overtime and Buffalo advanced.

The 49ers trailed 38-14 at home in the second half vs the Giants. Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens mounted a comeback. Owens caught nine passes for 177 and two touchdowns. Tai Streets scored the go-ahead touchdown with a minute left. The 49ers scored 25 unanswered points and won when the Giants botched the snap on a 40-yard field goal attempt as time ran out.

1/4/14: Colts 45, Chiefs 44

Andrew Luck threw three of his four touchdowns in the second half, scored on a fumble return and connected with a wide-open T.Y. Hilton on a 64-yard TD pass to give the Colts, who rallied from 28 down, an improbable 45-44 AFC Wild-Card victory.  “One for the ages,” said Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis’ coach. “I think somebody said that it was the second-largest comeback or whatever in the history of whatever. I guess 21 wasn’t large enough at half, so we thought we’d give them another seven, you know, just to make it interesting.” Luck finished 29-of-45 passing for 443 yards. Hilton broke franchise playoff records with 13 catches and 224 yards, and also caught two TDs.

1/5/17: Super Bowl LI — Patriots 34, Falcons 28

The Falcons took a 28–3 midway through the third quarter, with Matt Ryan completing his second touchdown pass. The Patriots then scored 25 unanswered points to tie the game at 28–28 with 57 seconds left in regulation. New England won the overtime coin toss, received the kickoff and drove 75 yards to win with a 2-yard touchdown run by running back James White.

1/12/20: Chiefs 51, Texans 31

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City had the home-field advantage but you would not have known it by the stone silence after Houston surged to a 24-0 lead. The Chiefs launched a stunning rally that saw them score 28 points and take the lead at halftime. They wound up scoring 41 in a row before the Texans finally responded with a Deshaun Watson run in the final moment of the third quarter. How many points did Kansas City score? Arrrowhead ran out of fireworks.
