An investigation is underway into a fatal motor vehicle accident in the US involving professional American footballer, Deshazor Everett.

Everett, who plays for the Washington Football Team in the National Football League (NFL), was involved in an accident on Thursday local time that left a passenger dead, his team said.

The 29-year-old was transferred to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the accident, which occurred about 56 kilometres outside Washington DC, in Loudoun County, Virginia.

A spokeswoman for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said the incident was under investigation and it was too soon to say whether any charges would be filed.

The Washington Football team issued a statement offering their condolences to those affected by the fatal accident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected by this tragedy," they said.

"Our team has alerted the league office and is working with local authorities as we continue to gather more information."

Everett's management agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The 29-year-old is a defensive back who has been with Washington for seven seasons.

He has been a regular in the team since he signed in 2015, playing 89 games.

Washington, who have a record of six wins and eight losses, play the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, 12:20pm AEDT.
