NFL officially sets 2019 salary cap at $188.2 million

With free agency less than two weeks away and the franchise tag deadline coming up on Tuesday, the NFL made a significant announcement Friday.

The league has raised the salary cap by a total of $11 million dollars from 2018. The new total is set at $188.2 million, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The NFL has consistently raised the cap over the past several seasons. Here’s a look at how much the number has been increased since the 2014 season:

Now that it has been set, an $188.2 million salary cap gives the Chargers $22.5 million to work with when the new league year begins on March 13th, which is 18th in the NFL, according to Over The Cap.

L.A. will still likely work to clear a little more cap room in order to add some outside players in free agency, re-sign a few, and possibly extend some of their own players who have contracts coming up soon.
