The latest domino has fallen in the 2021 offseason quarterback carousel. After weeks of speculation, the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to trade QB Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.
In return for Wentz, the Colts will send the Eagles a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick that could bump to a first-rounder if Wentz meets certain incentives. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has provided the primary reporting on the deal, which cannot be finalized until March 17th.
Wentz has seen a spectacular fall from his early grace in Philadelphia. He was a Pro Bowler in 2017, his second NFL season, and helped guide the Eagles to an 11-2 record. The Eagles proceeded to win the Super Bowl that year after Wentz was sidelined with an injury, riding Nick Foles at quarterback to the NFL’s ultimate prize.
Wentz has not been the same player since returning. He led the NFL in interceptions (15) and sacks (50) in 2020 despite playing in just 12 games. No player has more fumbles over the last five seasons than Wentz’s 58, too.
The Colts needed a replacement for Philip Rivers, who retired after the team’s wild-card loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Wentz was originally selected by the Eagles in the 2016 NFL draft after Philadelphia made a blockbuster trade with the Browns to move up to No. 2 overall.
