NFL Network Top 100: Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara clock in

The New Orleans Saints were well-represented on NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2019, with quarterback Drew Brees ranking second-overall and defensive end Cameron Jordan listed at No. 41. But they were joined by two teammates in the top-15 range: running back Alvin Kamara (No. 14), and wide receiver Michael Thomas (No. 13).

From the comments shared by defeated opponents, the Saints’ offensive duo is rightly respected across the league.

“All they’re doing is running Kamara on an option route,” complained Los Angeles Rams safety John Johnson on the sideline during a game against the Saints. His baffled teammate, defensive lineman Michael Brockers, nearly spat in exasperation.

“I know that’s what I’m saying,” Brockers answered, wide-eyed. “How do we stop that?”

Kamara’s efficiency took a small tumble last year, partly due to his increased volume of touches and partly because of weaker blocking at the second level. But he was still a dynamic threat on the ground and in through the air. And his peers are taking notice.

“What a lot of people don’t understand, or don’t know about him, is he’s very strong,” said Cleveland Browns running back Duke Johnson. “He breaks a lot of tackles, a lot of arm tackles, he’s tough to bring down.”

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan agreed, having had to line up against Kamara in practice for two years. “Alvin’s balance is unreal,” he said. “His ability to hit a hole and take off with the speed that he does is tremendous.”

Of course, Kamara was ranked just behind his own teammate. Thomas was slotted into the No. 13 spot. Just a few days later, Thomas inked a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the Saints. And Kamara is due his own payday in the next year or two.

“It’s the bond. Michael Thomas knows, him and Drew Brees have a unique bond,” explained Minnesota Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes picked his next words carefully. “Drew Brees knows Michael Thomas is not the fastest guy, but he knows Michael Thomas can go up and get the ball. So he can throw to his back shoulder. He’s not a back-shoulder to the point where he has to drop it low where only the receiver can get it, he can trust Thomas to go get it high.

“His routes,” Rhodes finished, shaking his head, “his routes are great.”
