NFL moves Chiefs vs. Chargers Week 17 game to afternoon slate

The NFL has announced changes to the Week 17 schedule and the Kansas City Chiefs are losing their last early game of the season.

The Chiefs are now set to host the Chargers at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 3 at Arrowhead Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for a noon kickoff, but it’ll now be played among several games set to be played in the afternoon slate. The game was also originally scheduled to be broadcasted on CBS, but will now be broadcasted on FOX instead.

This means Kansas City will have played just five games during the early slate in the entirety of the 2020 NFL season. If there was more tailgating at Arrowhead Stadium this year, fans would likely be irate by the move.

Here’s a look at the NFL’s new schedule for Week 17:

The NFL typically uses flexible scheduling to ensure that games with playoff implications are played during prime-viewing times. After the Chiefs locked up the No. 1 seed in Week 16, this game is essentially meaningless for Kansas City. They likely won’t even play their starters this week, so the move makes little sense in that regard.
