NFL Minute: The Chiefs and the NFL overtime debate

Despite many debates on the topic over the years, it appears that this is no perfect solution to the NFL’s overtime dilemma.

While the Kansas City Chiefs – who had their Super Bowl dreams dashed in January largely due to the fact they never had an overtime possession in the AFC Championship Game – have proposed a change to make sure both teams receive the ball after regulation, there is no guarantee any such rule will be implemented in the near future.

However, Tim Benz’s biggest problem with the overtime discussion is the debate over whether or not the league’s rules for the regular season and the postseason should be different.

Regardless of TV time windows, Benz argues that why should two AFC West teams fighting for a playoff spot in Week 17 have different OT rules than two opponents in the Wildcard round? The same can be applied for two divisional opponents in a random Week 8 contest.

Benz believes the NFL’s regular season is one of the few in pro sports that still has high stakes every week and would hate to see that undercut with differentiating rules.
