NFL Minute: Surprise trade down ends up working out for Broncos

Tim Benz was one of the many people who was caught off guard by the Denver Broncos trading down 10 spots during the NFL draft on Thursday night.

First of all, Denver traded back from a spot where Michigan linebacker Devin Bush was available and could have filled an important need in the Broncos’ front seven.

While there several other needs the team could have addressed with the No. 10 selection, it appears to have worked out alright for John Elway and company, regardless.

At No. 20 the Broncos landed the second-best tight end in the draft in Iowa’s Noah Fant. Later, they landed Missouri quarterback Drew Lock in the second round. So, in a way, Denver traded the rights to take Bush in favor of a passing combo that could shine in the Mile High City for years.

Benz also argues that new head coach Vic Fangio is just a year departed from his previous team – the Chicago Bears – selecting linebacker Roquan Smith in the first round. As a result, maybe the long-time defensive coordinator feels the Fant/Lock combo is more enticing than the linebacker people clamored for.
