NFL Minute: Patrick Mahomes and “Basketball-Gate”

There has been a multitude of comments in recent days, by fans and players alike, regarding Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes being asked by the team’s front office to stop playing pick-up basketball games during the offseason.

People have chimed in on Twitter and claimed that this is a case of the employer keeping the employee down and preventing someone — in this case, Mahomes — from doing what they want to do.

However, Mahomes is coming off an MVP campaign in his first season as an NFL starting quarterback and the Chiefs have a major investment in the 23-year-old’s future.

Tim Benz says if Mahomes wants to risk injury and future earnings by playing ball on the hardwood, he is more than welcome to. Yet, while recognizing that we are in an age where there has been more power ceeded to employees, there does need to be some boundaries.
