NFL Minute: Kyler Murray’s clapping problem

There are many different issues quarterback’s face when they transition from college into the National Football League. Little did we know, clapping might be one of those issues.

The No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft – quarterback Kyler Murray – was called for several penalties as a result of his pre-snap clapping. Officials in Arizona’s preseason tussle against the Oakland Raiders said he was “too abrupt” in his clap and that he did not bring his hands together “smooth enough”.

Yet, the bigger issue may be opposing teams reading the snap count as a result of those claps. Social media posts from field level showed Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive linemen timing their rushes and getting a head start as a result of Murray’s claps.

While it is a foregone conclusion that Murray will need to use his speed to stay upright until the Cardinals’ offensive line improves, Tim Benz says the former Heisman Trophy winner may be hurting his own cause at the line of scrimmage.
