NFL makes minor changes to practice squad rules for 2022

The NFL had an expanded practice squad the past two seasons. Teams could maintain a 16-man practice squad and, for the first time, were able to have unlimited veterans on it. Traditionally, it was meant to be a developmental unit filled with players who had not accrued much experience.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to some minor changes to rules for the practice squad for 2022.

The limit of 16 players will continue but teams will be limited only six veteran players on it.

Two players can be elevated from the practice squad each week to be eligible to play, as was the case the last two seasons. A player could be elevated to the active roster twice to the active roster under a standard elevation twice and revert immediately back to the practice squad without having to clear waivers.

In 2022, the standard elevation can be used three times without having to clear waivers.
