NFL has no plans to move start of new league year – yet

As the coronavirus pandemic descends upon the sports landscape, football fans are left to wonder how it’ll affect the NFL.

While the NFL is in the midst of its offseason, the new league year is set to begin on March 18 with the start of free agency.

But with the NBA, NHL, MLS and NCAA shutting down operations indefinitely — with MLB not far behind — there’s reason to wonder if the NFL would suspend or push the start of the new league year.

That doesn’t appear to be the case — at least at this point — as the NFL has said it has “no plans to move the start of the league year.”

While NFL action won’t be impacted immediately, as training camp is set to begin in late July, the NFL Draft is a different story. There was already speculation that the NFL Draft could be impacted.

There’s no formal plan that has been developed, the league is monitoring the growing threat of the coronavirus. The NFL already decided to cancel its annual spring meeting that was set for March 29 to April 1.
