Aaaaaaand here we go! The NFL regular season is fianlly here and there’s already some high profile matchups to take notice of. Atlanta travels to Minnesota, the Rams are at the Carolina Panthers, and Pittsburgh travels to Foxborough to take on New England. Winners And Whiners’ chief editor Ben Hayes takes a closer look and make some picks.
*Atlanta and Minnesota are coming off disappointing seasons and it might be playoff-or-bust for both coaches. The Vikes have concerns in their secondary with Mike Hughes coming back from an ACL injury. Both teams have a great group of receivers but Matt Ryan has the edge of Kirk Cousins at QB. Go with the road dog Falcons to cover.
*Cam Newton is expected to start against the LA Rams, who probably won’t be 100%. Part of Newton’s allure is his ability to run and now he’ll have to run away from Aaron Donald and Clay Matthews, who was added in the offseason. The Rams have more balance and improved defense. Take the Rams on the road.
*Pittsburgh has played New England five times in the last four years. The Steelers won last year by seven at home to break a five-game losing streak against the Pats. This year, there will be less drama in Pittsburgh and no Rob Gronkowski in Foxborough will make the Patriots a bit easier to defend-at least early on. Grab the points and the Steelers on the road.
