NFL free agency: Seahawks hosting 3 back end defenders today

Heading into Day 4 of the NFL’s 2023 free agency period, the Seattle Seahawks have only signed two players: former Broncos defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones and former Seattle defensive tackle Jarran Reed. Things might begin to pick up later today, though.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Seahawks are hosting Giants safety Julian Love as well as Steelers linebacker Devin Bush today.

Safety is arguably the strongest position group on Seattle’s roster, but Love has the ability to line up at multiple spots, giving him added value. Since the Giants picked him in the forth round of the 2019 NFL draft Love has appeared in 64 games but has only started half of them. He’s totaled five interceptions, 18 passes defensed and 291 combined tackles (13 for a loss).

On the other hand, inside linebacker is easily the weakest spot for this team – especially now that Cody Barton has signed with the Commanders and Tanner Muse has not received a tender. That makes Bush an intriguing target, even if he has yet to live up to his status as a former first-round pick out of Michigan. In 52 career games he’s put up four sacks, 10 QB hits and 286 combined tackles (13 for a loss). Bush would certainly fit the mold for Pete Carroll’s long-running reclamation project thing.

Then again, the linebacker market is drying up very fast. Lavonte David is returning to the Bucs, Eric Kendricks signed with the Chargers and Leighton Vander Esch is staying in Dallas. That just leaves a few names: Bobby Wagner, Deion Jones, Bobby Wagner, Cory Littleton, and also Bobby Wagner. Bobby Wagner. Bobby Wagner.

Anyway, Seattle is also hosting former Texans DB Lonnie Johnson, per Schefter:

Johnson was a second-round draft pick by Houston back in 2019. He spent three years with the Texans and then last season he joined the Titans. All together he’s played in 56 games, totaling three interceptions, 13 pass breakups and 183 combined tackles.
