NFL free agency: Saints signing former Panthers OT Chris Clark

The Saints are signing former Panthers offensive tackle Chris Clark, according to his agency.

Clark signed with Carolina early last year after Daryl Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. He was a liability on the blind side, allowing consistent pressure on Cam Newton’s left flank.

New Orleans already has a terrific starting left tackle in Terron Armstead though, so Sean Payton won’t need Clark to play a major role. Most likely he will compete for a spot at swing tackle, backing up Armstead and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

This year, the Panthers will either start Williams or second-round pick Greg Little at left tackle. Little has been practicing with the backups, but he had a respectable debut against the Bears.
