NFL free agency: Saints sign former Panthers DE Wes Horton

Former Panthers defensive end Wes Horton has signed with the division rival Saints, according to their team website.

Horton played college football at USC and went undrafted. He has carved out a solid NFL career for himself as a backup edge defender, though. During his 77-game run in Carolina, Horton totaled 95 combined tackles (13 for a loss), 15.5 sacks, 23 quarterback hits and seven forced fumbles.

The Saints had a strong pass rush last season, finishing fifth in the league with 49 sacks. It is a bit top heavy though, as Cameron Jordan and Sheldon Rankins accounted for 20 of them. Adding Horton to the mix gives them just a little more edge firepower.

This particular NFC South rivalry has become one-sided in recent years, with New Orleans winning four of the last five meetings. Carolina’s only victory came in a meaningless Week 17 matchup to close out 2018 with the Saints sitting their most important players.
