NFL free agency: Former Panthers RB C.J. Anderson signs with Lions

The Detroit Lions’ run game hasn’t been much to write home about ever since Barry Sanders retired. Perhaps C.J. Anderson can help turn that sad history around.

According to a report by Mike Garafolo at NFL Network, the former Carolina Panthers running back has signed with Detroit.

Anderson signed with Carolina last offseason on a one-year deal but rarely got on the field as the team elected to play Christian McCaffrey as many snaps as possible.

After he was released in the middle of the season, Anderson spent a few minutes with the Raiders before moving on to the Rams. He was a star for LA at the tail-end of the regular season and during their NFC playoff run.

In 69 career games, Anderson has rushed 760 times for 3,454 yards and 22 touchdowns. Most of them were spent in Denver.

It will be interesting to see what kind of role the Lions have in mind for Anderson, who might just be the best running back on their roster now.
