Falcons sign former Cardinals OL John Wetzel

The Falcons are determined to make their offensive line bigger and better for the 2019 season. Most of the team’s free agent moves have been centered around that idea, anyway. Today, that trend continued with the signing of former Cardinals offensive lineman John Wetzel, per the team website.

Like Matt Ryan, Wetzel played at Boston College. He went undrafted, though, and was first signed by the Raiders in 2013. After that, he put in time with the Cowboys and Colts before getting his opportunity in Arizona late in the 2015 season.

Over the last three years, Wetzel has started 24 games for the Cardinals. What makes him unique is his size (6-foot-7, 328 pounds) and experience – Wetzel has played every spot except center at one point. That kind of versatility is an obvious asset for the Falcons, who have needs at several positions.

The team also confirmed the signing of Chris Odom, reported on Monday.
