NFL free agency: Contract details for incoming Panthers center Matt Paradis

When a contract looks too good to be true, the devil is often in the details. That’s not the case for the Carolina Panthers and center Matt Paradis. Tuesday’s reported agreement between the two sides (nothing is official until 4:00pm ET Wednesday) will put the standout lineman in black and blue for at least the next three years to the tune of $27.03 million and $12 million guaranteed, according to Over the Cap.

The 29-year-old will account for just 2.1 percent of the team’s cap room next season and 4.4 percent in 2020. That’s important for a relatively cash-strapped team still seeking to fill multiple roster holes on offense and defense. Here’s all the details, per OTC.

Even with Paradis coming on-board and two keepers in All-Pro Trai Turner and Taylor Moton manning the right side, questions remain about the line. At left guard, Greg Von Roten played every snap in 2018 but was hardly an Andrew Norwell. Left tackle remains the team’s most problematic offensive position.

At least for now, quarterback Cam Newton can head into the spring feeling quite good about three-fifths of his line. At this price, so can Hurney.

The structure is somewhat similar to what general manager Marty Hurney has devised before. Jon Beason, James Anderson and Charles Godfrey come to mind.
