NFL free agency: Cardinals sign another former Falcons defender

The Arizona Cardinals are not good at football but at least they are consistent in some respects. One long-standing tradition for the organization is to take on former Atlanta Falcons players as reclamation projects. This week, Arizona continued that trend by signing former Falcons cornerback Robert Alford to a three-year deal. Alford was cut by Atlanta earlier this week for salary cap savings.

Saturday, the Cardinals followed that move by snapping up another player the Falcons just cut: defensive end Brooks Reed. According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, Reed has signed a one-year deal with Arizona worth $2 million.

Reed had been with the Falcons since the 2015 season after spending the first four years of his NFL career in Houston.

In 120 career pro games, he’s totaled 270 combined tackles (35 for a loss), 54 QB hits, four forced fumbles and 11 pass breakups. Reed is not a superstar. He is a solid and disciplined run defender though who could help turn around an Arizona defense that allowed 4.9 yards per carry last season, tied with the Falcons for No. 27 in the NFL.
