The salaries for players playing the 2019 NFL season on a franchise tag have been set. The 49ers used their franchise tag this offseason on kicker Robbie Gould. It’s the first time they’ve tagged a player since 2012.
The 49ers will only owe Gould $4.9 million – a perfectly fair price to pay for a reliable kicker on a team with close to $70 million in salary cap room.
There’s always the chance San Francisco and Gould hammer out an extension and avoid the kicker signing the tag. The two sides discussed a multi-year deal during the offseason but never came to an agreement, leading to the tag being placed on the kicker.
He’ll play this season for a fully guaranteed $4.9 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.
Gould, 36, has been one of the league’s best kickers in his two seasons with the 49ers. He’s hit 72 of his 75 kicks, and led the league with a 97.1 percent success rate last season.
