NFL fans had plenty of jokes for Marcus Mariota practicing at wide receiver

Heading into the 2015 NFL Draft, there was essentially a universal consensus among NFL scouting experts that Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were the best two quarterbacks in the class. Both were Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks with tools that should have translated to NFL success.

Fast forward four years: Winston can’t stop throwing interceptions, and, uh, Mariota is lining up at wide receiver in practice to catch passes from Titans starter Ryan Tannehill.

While the Titans aren’t actually thinking of a full-time position change for Mariota (as far as we know), he did lose his starting role to Tannehill and hasn’t played since Week 6. So, at least for a portion of practice that was open to the media, Mariota gave wide receiver a try on Thursday.

It looked something like this:

Imagine seeing that video four years ago. Man, 2019 is wild.

Hey, before we all make fun of Mariota’s route running or this sad development in his career, let’s remember that 66 percent of Mariota’s career receptions have resulted in touchdowns. OK, he only has three catches (including playoffs), but the stat is still valid and sorta awesome.

And, yes, there were jokes from NFL fans.

I guess Bill Polian chose the wrong quarterback to turn into a wide receiver.
