NFL fans couldn’t believe a ref came out of nowhere to end the Cowboys’ season

The Dallas Cowboys have not advanced out of the Divisional round in 26 years, and that drought will continue after Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in their NFC Wild Card matchup.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s going to be a long offseason for Dallas after the hectic final play that put an end to the season.

On second down and one with 14 seconds remaining and no timeouts, Dak Prescott elected to run up the middle of the field. It was an incredibly risk move with no way of stopping the clock, but it briefly appeared that the Cowboys would be able to get the snap off and spike it (or run a play). There was just one problem:

The umpire hadn’t spotted the ball.
