Round 1 is in the books.

Thanks for following along. As always, we won’t know who did well until at least mid-season and usually not for about three or four seasons. But the Browns made solid moves. The Browns! As did the 49ers. And congratulations to running backs. You’re officially back as a position to take in the Top 10.

Finally, let’s not forget the great night by the City of Philadelphia. Eagles fans helped make Round 1 a big event and they did a fine job booing Roger Goodell, which is really all that matters.

Check out The Guardian tomorrow for more draft coverage.

No. 32 - Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin - New Orleans Saints

Needing defense, the Saints go offensive line.

The first round is over.

No. 31 - Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama - San Francisco 49ers

Foster’s fall ends. So the 49ers get Solomon Thomas and Foster, two players many scouts ranked as Top 5 or 10 talents. Nice work by John Lynch.

T.J. Watt and the Steelers will play J.J. Watt and the Texans this year on Christmas Day.

The Watts are the new Mannings.

No. 30 - T.J. Watt, OLB, Wisconsin - Pittsburgh Steelers

After a long tribute to Dan Rooney by Franco Harris and Jerome Bettis, the Steelers take Watt.

Looks like Pittsburgh is taking J.J. Watt’s little/giant brother.

No. 29 - David Njoku, TE, Miami - Cleveland Browns

No quarterback for the Browns. They go with a tight end who can jump.

Miami remains a tight end factory.

Forget football stuff. The fact Charlton got a Twitter handle this good is pretty impressive.

No. 28 - Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan - Dallas Cowboys

Vidauntae “Taco” Charlton is the pick for Dallas, who probably can’t hope to do as well as they did in last year’s draft.

The Cowboys need more help at cornerback than on the line, but they could upgrade most everywhere on defense and obviously took the remaining defensive player they had highest on their board.

Updated

No. 27 - Tre'Davious White, CB, LSU - Buffalo Bills

White has a ton of upside as a cornerback, but he is also a big kick return threat.

The Browns may be trying to land a quarterback:

New Broncos OT Garett Bolles took his son onto the stage with him.

Again, this is his son. Denver did not trade for Danny Woodhead.

No. 26 - Takkarist McKinley, OLB, UCLA - Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons get the speedy linebacker out of UCLA who can rush the passer. Maybe he can help Atlanta hold 28-3 leads.

Too soon?

Maybe.

Anyway, Atlanta traded up with Seattle to make this pick.

Updated

Come on, Philadelphia fans. You’re getting quiet. Keep that booing of Goodell going. We counted on you.

No. 25 - Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan - Cleveland Browns

I hate to say it, but ... the Browns are doing pretty well tonight. Myles Garrett and Jabrill Peppers are solid picks and they managed to get Peppers after trading down from No. 12. Watch out for the ... Cleveland Browns?

Conley dropped 10-15 spots because of the allegations. In case you’re wondering how seriously NFL teams take rape allegations. (Not very seriously.)

Last year, Laremy Tunsil dropped about the same amount because he smoked marijuana.

Yikes.

Updated

No. 24 - Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State - Oakland Raiders

Conley was accused of raping a woman in a Cleveland hotel on April 9th. Conley has said those allegations are “completely false.”

Oakland apparently believes he’s innocent.

No. 23 - Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss - New York Giants

The Giants add another receiver to their arsenal. Engram is listed as a tight end, but he has receiver speed.

Engram went to the same school as Eli Manning. But Engram was a toddler when Eli went there.

And some people say the NFL Draft isn’t exciting.

No. 22 - Charles Harris, DE, Missouri - Miami Dolphins

Miami bolsters its defense. But the big story here is that Harris had Big Foot at his draft party.

No. 21 - Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida - Detroit Lions

Davis is a tough inside linebacker who can tackle. Not the type of player who will wow anyone, but the kind of solid guy NFL teams need at the position. Most mock drafts had him available later, but the Lions took him now.

So I guess no one is going to see his draft stock sunk by a leaked weed photo, huh?

No. 20 - Garett Bolles, OT, Utah - Denver Broncos

Bolles is the first offensive lineman taken in the 2017 NFL Draft. This is the latest an offensive lineman has been picked in the modern history of the draft.

No. 19 - O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jameis Winston has the best tight end in the draft. And another Alabama player goes.

It seems the Bears forgot to call Trubisky before drafting him. For some organizations, it’s a funny story. For a team like the Bears, it just makes their fans wonder if they remain forever incompetent.

No. 18 - Adoree' Jackson, CB, USC - Tennessee Titans

The Titans went wide receiver earlier in the 1st Round and now add a cornerback. Look for the Titans, who went 9-7 last year, to be a popular pick to make the playoffs.

No. 17 - Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama - Washington

Here comes the Alabama run.

Washington gets Allen, from the DC suburb of Leesburg, Virginia. He probably knows the Washington organization well. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

Nice draft moment: Ravens had a cancer survivor and Make-A-Wish kid announce their pick.

No. 16 - Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama - Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens pick the first Alabama player of the draft. Usually there’s four or five gone by now. Maybe that’s why they only managed to finish second in college football last year? That must be it. Your team is now just a good NFL roster instead of a great one, Alabama. Fix that.

ESPN analyst Jon Gruden just dumped all over Indy’s pick of Malik Hooker, saying he misses tackles, takes poor angles and has little experience. But maybe he has a nice personality?

No. 15 - Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State - Colts

That’s the second Ohio State defensive back off the board in the first half of the 1st Round.

Hooker is a former high school basketball player who can go up and get the ball in coverage. It’s kind of a surprise no one tried to make him into a tight end.

Congrats, kid.

No. 14 - Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee - Philadelphia Eagles

Barnett broke Reggie White’s career sacks record at Tennessee.

Maybe Barnett will win a championship with the Packers one day. I kid, I kid. Solid pick by the Eagles.

The hometown Eagles are up now. Lots of options for them, according to Mike Mayock.

No. 13 - Haason Reddick, LB, Temple - Arizona Cardinals

No quarterback for the Cardinals. The pick makes the Philadelphia crowd applaud, though, because Reddick is from Temple University.

From Temple walk-on to the 13th pick in the draft. Not too bad.

The Cardinals are now up at No. 13 and would love to get a young QB in as Carson Palmer’s immediate/eventual replacement. But they just got trampled by the run on quarterbacks.

No pressure, DeShaun.

No. 12 - DeShaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Houston Texans

Huge get by the Texans when they have a playoff-quality team with only Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden on the roster.

There’s zero way to know if Watson will pan out in the NFL, as with all QBs, but he has a ton of upside and the Texans haven’t had a quarterback like that ... ever.

Here are the full details of the trade that got the Chiefs to No. 10 and Patrick Mahomes.

Browns trade No. 12 pick to Texans

The Browns have made a trade of their No. 12 pick ... but it’s to the Texans, not Washington. So no Cousins deal. At least for now.

Cleveland gets the 25th overall pick AND Houston’s 2018 1st Round pick. Wow.

Updated

We’re a few minutes away from the Browns picking again at No. 12. If they really are trying to land Kirk Cousins, now is the time.

No. 11 - Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State - New Orleans Saints

The Saints, desperate for defense, get one of the top cornerbacks in the draft. Now we see if Lattimore can get up to speed fast enough while Drew Brees and Adrian Peterson still have something left in the tank.

The Chiefs have Alex Smith signed through the 2018 season, so considering Mahomes is a little rough around the edges, it’s probably Smith’s job until then.

Although, that’s pretty much the same story we thought we had last year with Tony Romo and Dak Prescott.

No. 10 - Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech - Kansas City Chiefs

Alex Smith’s days are numbered in Kansas City.

Good to know.

So it seems the new draft rule is: You don’t pick a running back early ... unless there’s a running back you really want to pick early.

No. 9 - John Ross, WR, Washington - Cincinnati Bengals

Ross is the fastest guy in the draft. And, well, every draft ever. He ran a record 4.22 40 at the combine. With Tyler Boyd and Tyler Eifert, he gives Andy Dalton some impressive weapons.

Can Dalton utilize those weapons, though?

Whatever you think of Carolina’s pick, McCaffrey has very quick feet.

Also: nice Brady Quinn Broncos jersey.

No. 8 - Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford - Carolina Panthers

McCaffrey goes early. That’s two Stanford players picked in the top eight. Not too bad for a university of that level.

No. 7 - Mike Williams, WR, Clemson - Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers get the national champ. Williams is the third Clemson WR taken in Round 1 since 2013.

Mike Williams is a very popular wide receiver name. The Lions and the Bucs have both had a wideout named Mike Williams in recent years.

Cleveland!

There is some pressure on Jamal Adams’ offspring.

No. 6 - Jamal Adams, S, LSU - New York Jets

The Jets need a lot of help, but especially in the secondary and they get the highest-rated safety in the draft in Jamal Adams.

That’s now two LSU players in the last three picks. The Tigers went 8-4 last year.

If Twitter trolls ran the world, we’d be doomed ... but Titans fans don’t love the Davis pick.

(And, yes, I realize a Twitter troll currently runs the United States of America.)

No. 5 - Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan - Tennessee Titans

From the MAC to the NFL as a No. 5 pick. Marcus Mariota gets a very talented receiver.

Fournette is undoubtedly excited to be taken No. 4 in the draft.

But let’s pretend he’s making this face because he’s sad to be a Jaguar.

Here is the man tasked with being the franchise savior of the Chicago Bears:

No. 4 - Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU - Jacksonville Jaguars

Picking running backs early is supposedly a no-no, but Dallas got Ezekiel Elliott at No. 4 last year, as well.

Jacksonville has a ton of talent at the skill positions now. Unfortunately, Blake Bortles is the one tasked with getting the ball to those skill players.

Here are the details on the big Bears-49ers trade.

That’s a lot to give up for one slot in the draft. Obviously the Bears think Trubisky is worth it. But ... I guess we’ll all find out.

No. 3 - Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford - San Francisco 49ers

Great start to John Lynch’s tenure as 49ers GM. With the Bears giving up four picks to move up one spot and seemingly reach for Trubisky, he still gets a very good player in Thomas.

Check out the comments under this tweet from Bears fans.

Results are, uhhhh ... mixed.

Pretty much no one had Trubisky going to the Bears, even at No. 3, which now means the whole draft board has been overturned.

Awesome. (As I said earlier, this annual reading of names is always far more exciting than you might think.)

Look for a team to go for DeShaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes now, worried there will be a quick run on QBs.

No. 2 - Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina - Chicago Bears

Whooooooa. So much for Solomon Thomas. Bears go quarterback.

This after they paid a good amount of money in free agency to Mike Glennon.

Here is Myles Garrett with Buffalo Bills and Virginia Tech legend Bruce Smith for reasons that are unclear.

49ers trade No. 2 overall pick to Chicago Bears

Looks like the Bears are moving up to get Solomon Thomas, DE, from Stanford.

A trade already. So much for every mock draft.

The Bears had the No. 3 overall pick which is part of the swap, but no word yet on what else is included in the deal.

Updated

No. 1 - Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M - Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have officially not selected a quarterback at No. 1. That’s a positive even regardless of Garrett’s massive upside.

Updated

God bless you, Philadelphia.

The 2017 NFL Draft is officially underway

Goodell just put the Browns on the clock.

Someone is about to join the list of Cleveland No. 1 picks that include Tim Couch and Courtney Brown.

Roger Goodell is at the podium and gets a massive boo from the crowd.

Philadelphia is the best city for this and they’re doing a great job of letting the commissioner know what NFL fans think of him.

Uh-oh?

The Draft has become a huge event in recent years, and Philadelphia is really doing it up. What evidence do I have?

There’s a ball pit.

If the Browns do go with Garrett No. 1, the 49ers could look to take Trubisky (or Watson) with the second pick. They need a quarterback, as well. And also really everything. That’s a blessing in a draft if you play it the right way and just draft the best player available, regardless of position.

But teams don’t usually get to No. 2 in the draft by making great decisions.

I will be liveblogging tonight’s festivities, of course. But also keep an eye on the president’s Twitter feed. I likes to give draft takes.

As reported pretty much everywhere, the Browns seem set on taking Myles Garrett from Texas A&M with the first pick.

That doesn’t mean they’re out of the quarterback market, though. One, because it’s the Browns; drafting quarterbacks is what they do. But, two, they also hold the 12th pick and the first pick of the 2nd Round and could easily trade up to take Mitchell Trubisky or Deshaun Watson.

Welcome to the liveblog for the 2017 NFL Draft.

It’s easy to laugh this annual event off as just four hours of people reading names off of cards, but ... it’s actually quite a big event, the months of hype aside.

There’s no single regular season week as impactful to a team as draft weekend. And then there are the amazing stories that someone happen every year during the broadcast. Ask Laremy Tunsil about that.

Glad to have you along for the night. Feel free to tweet questions to me at @DJGalloEtc or at the e-mail address above.

DJ will be with us shortly, in the meantime here’s how Paolo Bandini sees the top three going down:

1) Cleveland Browns

Pick: Myles Garrett, edge rusher, Texas A&M

Yeah, we’ve all seen the reports suggesting that the Browns could yet spend this pick on a quarterback - and specifically Mitch Trubisky. And yeah, I suspect that’s a smokescreen. The Browns’ front office might rate the North Carolina alum highest out of this year’s passers, but a team that has made such a big point of restructuring its front office to prioritise cool analytics couldn’t really spend the No1 pick on a guy with 13 college starts … could they?

Garrett is the stand-out player in this draft, a 6ft 4in terror who can cover 40 yards in 4.64 seconds despite weighing more than 270lbs, and who piled up 32.5 sacks in three years at Texas A&M. He ought to be the pick. But hey, they are still the Browns…

2) San Francisco 49ers

Pick: Solomon Thomas, defensive end, Stanford

John Lynch has made no secret of his willingness to trade down from No2, and if the 49ers can get a decent price then I expect that’s exactly what they’ll do. If not, then this pick becomes a fascinating one to watch because the 49ers could justifiably go in just about any direction at this point of a total roster overhaul.

I considered giving them Leonard Fournette here, a move that would allow them to use Carlos Hyde as trade currency. Instead I’ll say that Lynch – seeking a “cornerstone” player for his franchise – takes the safer option in the form of a versatile and hard-working athlete who could bring a little intimidation factor back to a defense that currently owns just a single player with more than 14 career sacks.

3) Chicago Bears

Pick: Malik Hooker, safety, Ohio State

I wanted to give the Bears a quarterback, as I don’t believe for one second that this team believes Mike Glennon is a long-term answer. Although they are overpaying him this year, he is guaranteed just $2.5m in 2018, so drafting someone who could be developed to step in then would make a lot of sense. But neither general manager Ryan Pace nor head coach John Fox have great job security after consecutive last-place finishes in the NFC North, so quick fixes are required. The Bears’ ragged defense intercepted just eight passes last season (only Jacksonville had fewer). Hooker had seven on his own at Ohio State.
