NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirms 17-game schedule is on the table

One of the most contentious points of the upcoming NFL collective bargaining agreement negotiations is going to pertain to the length of the regular-season schedule. According to NFL writer Tom Pelissero, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has confirmed a 17-game regular season is on the table when CBA talks begin.

This whole schedule debate is all about money compared to the effort to get it. The league and the owners want to make as much money as humanly possible. Which is sort of wacky when you consider how many billions of dollars change hands because of the NFL.

On the other side are the players. Who also wants to make as much money as possible. But they want to do it while doing as little as they can to get it. Hence the disagreement about adding a regular-season game. The argument always made centers around the risk of injury, which is real. But in a league where the players have become more and more bold about demanding more and more guaranteed money, they are going to have to give somewhere to get it. And that might be with an extra game.
