NFL bumps 2019 salary cap to $188.2M

We now know how much money NFL teams will have to play with in 2019.

The NFL has raised the salary cap by a total of $11 million dollars from 2018. The new total is set at $188.2 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The NFL has consistently raised the cap over the past several seasons by an increase of anywhere from $10 – 12 million dollars annually. Here’s a look at how much the number has been increased since the 2014 NFL season:

  • 2014: $133 million
  • 2015: $143.3 million
  • 2016: $155.3 million
  • 2017: $167 million
  • 2018: $177.2 million
  • 2019: $188.2 million

Now that the salary cap has been set we’ve got projections on just how much money the Chiefs will have to spend before they make any moves, such as cutting or trading away players. According to Over the Cap, an $188.2 million salary cap gives the Chiefs $25.1 million to work with when the new league year begins on March 13th.

This is a good number for whatever the Chiefs decide to do with Dee Ford, be it use the franchise tag or sign him to a long term contract extension. The amount is right around the projected increase for this year, so there’s no surprises that help or hurt the Chiefs in terms of cap space. They’ll still likely work to clear a little more cap room in order to add some outside players in free agency and extend some of their own players who have contracts coming up soon.
