NFL Black Monday tracker: the latest news on which coaches and GMs are on the hot seat

The annual post-Week 17 round of coach and general manager firings in the NFL — known colloquially as “Black Monday” — got started a little early this year.

On Sunday, the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Freddie Kitchens after just one season at the helm of what was supposed to be a promising team that could have a shot at competing for a playoff spot.

Monday morning started off with some news trickling in, but it might take a few hours — or days — before we know who’s safe and who’s being let go.

This is our handy tracker that we’ll update as news comes in with a list of coaches and general managers who might be on the hot seat:

1. Cleveland Browns: Freddie Kitchens

Update: He was let go on Sunday.

But it’s possible some of his assistants stick around?

There’s also some people wondering if GM John Dorsey could be next.

2. Washington Redskins: President Bruce Allen

Update: He was fired on Monday.

He was with the franchise for 10 seasons and oversaw only two playoff rosters. It’s a house-cleaning for the hapless Redskins, who also fired Jay Gruden in October after falling to 0-5 in 2019. But it sounds like Ron Rivera could be the team’s next head coach:

3. New York Giants: Pat Shurmur

I could also list general manager Dave Gettleman, but the buzz is the franchise could let go of Shurmur after going 9-23 in the two seasons he’s coached the Giants. There’s no news yet on his status.

4. Dallas Cowboys: Jason Garrett

Jerry Jones was pretty non committal after the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday. So there’s no news yet.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Doug Marrone

There was this report on Saturday:

But then …

So we’ll see what the Jags officially decide to do.

6. Detroit Lions: Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn

I’m putting them here because the Lions were awful this year. But there was this word from ownership earlier this month:
