NFL announces compensatory picks for 2019 draft

The NFL released its compensatory selections for the upcoming 2019 NFL draft in April on Friday. This takes into account free agent losses and acquisitions from the previous offseason.

This is a way for teams to build up their rosters while avoiding spending a lot of money to retain their free agents (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter):

The New England Patriots get richer, as they pick up two third-round compensatory selections as well as a sixth and seventh-round pick. Those selections come after New England lost offensive tackle Nate Solder, running back Dion Lewis and cornerback Malcolm Butler in free agency last March.

The team the Patriots defeated in Super Bowl LIII, the Los Angeles Rams also have two additional third-round picks. Those picks came from letting wide receiver Sammy Watkins and cornerback Trumaine Johnson leave in free agency last year.
