July 08--The NFL's footprint in Europe continues to grow.
The league announced a 10-year deal Tuesday to play at least two games a season at the new home of English Premier League franchise Tottenham Hotspur FC.
Tottenham's new stadium, which will feature a retractable grass field and a separate artificial field, is under construction. The 61,000-seat venue in London is scheduled to open in August 2018.
"With growing enthusiasm for the NFL in the United Kingdom, we are committed to hosting NFL games in world-class venues and are excited to partner with Tottenham Hotspur to play games at their future stadium," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
The NFL is also looking into the possibility of playing games at other venues in the United Kingdom. Since 2007, the league has played its International Series games at Wembley Stadium, which will host three contests this year. The NFL's contract with Wembley expires in 2016, but the league may seek to extend the deal.
Olympic Park in London, Twickenham Stadium and Millennium Stadium in Cardiff could be potential sites for future games, according to NFL.com
"We have an opportunity now to deliver one of the most unique sporting and entertainment venues in the world, bringing together the EPL and NFL for the first time," Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said.
