NFL 100 Greatest Characters: Jim McMahon, Mike Ditka among top-ranked Bears

In 100 years, the NFL has seen its share of characters. Players and coaches that, successful or not, were some of the league’s most-talked about people.

Five more former Bears players and coaches landed on NFL 100’s Greatest Characters list, which unveiled No. 30-1 on Friday.

The man they called the Fridge, William Perry quickly stole the hearts of those that watched him as a member of the legendary 1985 Bears, which landed him at No. 23.

One name strikes fear into the hearts of NFL players is Dick Butkus, who was the embodiment of what a linebacker should be. “He played the game the way the game was supposed to be played,” Mike Ditka said, which landed Butkus at No. 13.

Former Bears defensive coordinator and mastermind of the most ferocious defense in NFL history, Buddy Ryan came in at No. 11.

Keeping with the trend of the 1985 Bears that made the top 30 on this list, Da Coach and the Punky QB landed at No. 10 and No. 9 respectively. Ditka and Jim McMahon were the highest-ranked “characters” that were on the Bears.
