NFC West watch: Cardinals select quarterback Kyler Murray No. 1 overall

After months of endless speculation, the Arizona Cardinals made quite a splash by selecting quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

Ever since the Cardinals hired former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury, rumors began circulating about the possibility of Arizona taking another quarterback in the first round only a year after drafting Josh Rosen in 2018. A video from October surfaced of Kingsbury saying he would take Murray No. 1 overall if he could. Now, it appears this has become reality.

In his lone season as a starter at the college level, Kyler Murray turned plenty of heads with 42 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns against only seven interceptions. Murray led the Oklahoma Sooners to a fourth straight Big XII championship and a second straight trip to the College Football Playoff.

While the Sooners ultimately fell short against Alabama, these accomplishments were more than enough to earn Murray the illustrious Heisman Trophy.

However, this pick does not come without some slight controversy. The Cardinals selected Rosen with the No. 10 overall pick last season, but he disappointed with a 3-10 record, throwing only 11 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. After only a year, it appears the Cardinals wish to go in a different direction at the quarterback position.

The Seahawks will now face off against a new-look Cardinals, as well as the reigning Heisman winner twice a year.
