NFC North watch: Recapping the 1st round for the Lions divisional foes

The Detroit Lions were the first NFC North team to make a pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. It didn’t take long for division mates Green Bay and Minnesota to add first-round talents to their rosters, too.

Green Bay

With the No. 12 overall pick, the Packers tabbed Michigan defensive end Rashan Gary. He’s a curious fit for the Packers, who signed Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith at the same position in free agency and still have effective starter Mike Daniels playing the down line position where Gary also fits.

They stuck to the Big 10 with Maryland safety Darnell Savage with their second pick, acquired in a trade up with Seattle at No. 21. Savage is the seventh defensive back taken in the first two rounds by Green Bay in the last four drafts.

Minnesota

The Vikings bolstered their offensive line with North Carolina State center Garrett Bradbury. The No. 18 overall pick can also play guard and figures to start right away in front of Kirk Cousins.

As for Chicago, the Bears don’t pick until No. 89 overall, the middle of the third round. Most Bears fans consider Khalil Mack and Anthony Miller worth the trades that cost them their earlier picks.
