NFC North watch: Packers give up on 2017 2nd rounder Josh Jones

The Green Bay Packers have spent a plethora of draft resources on rebuilding their secondary in the past few years. One of the reasons why they keep throwing draft picks at cornerback and safety that wind up being huge swings and misses.

Their latest whiff is on 2017 second-round pick Josh Jones. Green Bay waived him on Sunday after two extremely underwhelming and injury-plagued seasons.

Jones never really found a role in the Packers defense, fluctuating between safety and a hybrid S/LB role in Mike Pettine’s defense. Battling several minor injuries and illnesses stunted his development. Earlier this offseason he tried to force a trade by sitting out of mandatory minicamp, but it appears no other NFL team wanted to give anything up to acquire Jones.

He played in 29 of 32 games for the Packers, accruing 126 tackles, three sacks, seven pass breakups and one interception.

Jones is a native of Walled Lake, MI and played collegiately at North Carolina State.

A look at the Packers drat assets spent on the secondary in recent years:

2014 1st round: safety Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, now with the Bears after being dumped last year

2015 1st round: safety Damarious Randall, traded to Cleveland in 2018 for backup QB DeShone Kizer

2015 2nd round: CB Quentin Rollins, cut after 2017 and out of the league

2017 1st round: CB Kevin King, 15 games in two injury-ravaged seasons after also being hurt a lot in college

2017 2nd round: Jones, now gone

2018 1st round: CB Jaire Alexander, and that’s a big positive hit for the Packers
