Neymar suffers Ballon d'Or snub: France Football provide EIGHT reasons after 'black year' for PSG star

France Football have provided written reasons for Neymar's omission from the Ballon d'Or 30-man shortlist after what they described as a 'black year' for the Brazilian.

The French magazine gave a detailed list of events which ultimately led to the world's most expensive player missing out as the 30-man list for the most coveted individual award was published on Monday.

The 27-year-old was the most high-profile snub as last year's winner, Luka Modric, also failed to make France Football's list of nominees.

The publication provided eight reasons for the decision to leave out Neymar:

  • January 23 - Metatarsal injury
  • March 6 - Abusing match official after Man Utd match
  • April 27 - Pushing a supporter
  • June 6 - Ankle injury ahead of Copa America
  • August 9 - Cleared of rape allegation
  • Transfer window - Failed move to Barcelona
  • September 14 - Jeered by PSG fans
  • October 13 - Another injury on international duty

Among them were three injuries. The first against Strasbourg in January's Coupe de France tie robbed the Brazilian of his chance to face Manchester United in the Champions League, which ended the club's bid for a first Champions League title.

The second, an ankle injury in the build-up to the Copa America, denied Neymar a chance to banish his club woes with glory on the international stage. A third injury on international duty in October compounded a miserable year for Neymar.

Away from the pitch, Neymar faced rape allegation, though prosecutors dropped the case against him at the end of July due to a lack of evidence.

He was also criticised by France football for abusing a match official after their defeat to United at the Parc des Princes in March. He was then banned for three games in April after pushing a fan as he went to collect his winners' medal after the Coupe de France final.

Neymar's failed move to Barcelona also counted against him as France Football drew up their shortlist of 30.

The PSG star pushed for a move back to Barcelona during a drawn-out summer saga, and was jeered on his return to the side in September after recovering from the ankle problem which ruled him out of the Copa America.

Despite a troubled year, Neymar scored 23 goals and laid on 13 assists in 28 games last season, and already has four goals in five league starts this term.
