Neymar's declaration on Lionel Messi reunion at PSG as Barcelona exit confirmed

Neymar's chances of securing a dream reunion with Lionel Messi have taken a huge leap forward as Barcelona have confirmed the Argentine's departure.

Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as frontrunners for Messi's signature after Barca failed to agree a new contract with their former captain and greatest ever player.

La Liga's salary cap regulations proved an insurmountable stumbling block, with president Javier Tebas refusing to allow the Catalan club to rubber stamp a lucrative new deal for the 34-year-old.

But one club who should have little trouble stumping up a big-money contract for Messi are Ligue 1 giants PSG - and Neymar is desparate to join forces with his close friend once again.

Last season, the Brazilian made clear his desire to play alongside Messi again, having departed Barcelona in 2017 in a world-record £198million move to the French capital.

Neymar struck up a close bond with Messi during four trophy-laden seasons at Camp Nou which included a historic treble-winning 2014/15 campaign.

Speaking in December, the 29-year-old declared his greatest desire is to line up alongside the six-time Ballon d'Or winner once again.

"What I want most of all is to play with Messi again, to be able to enjoy him once again on the pitch," Neymar told ESPN .

"He can play in my place, I have no problem with that. But I want to play with him next year, for sure. We have to do it next season."

Neymar and Messi have spent time together on holiday in Ibiza over the last week, while they also faced off in the Copa America final for their respective nations last month.

Messi captained Argentina to a 1-0 victory over defending-champions Brazil to win his first major trophy at international level.

After the match, he was seen embracing Neymar and the two were pictures deep in conversation.

The Santos academy graduate subsequently opened up on his conversation with his "brother" in an Instagram post, writing: "Losing hurts me, it hurts me… it’s something I still haven’t learned to live with.

"Yesterday when I lost, I went to give a hug to the biggest and best in history that I saw playing.

"My friend and brother MESSI, I was sad and I told him 'you beat me'. I am very sad for having lost. But this guy is awesome! I have great respect for what he has done for football and especially for me.

"I HATE TO LOSE!!!! But enjoy your title, football was waiting for you for that moment! Congratulations Brother."

With PSG favourites to sign Messi this summer, Neymar's burning desire to reunite with his former teammate may be granted.
