Neymar rape case 'dropped by police' in Brazil over lack of evidence

Police in Brazil investigating rape allegations against Brazil star Neymar have closed the case, according to reports.

AFP report that the Sao Paulo general attorney's office has said the case has been suspended due to lack of evidence.

The police decision will be sent to prosecutors on Tuesday, who will have 15 days to evaluate the findings before a final decision will be made by a judge.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker had been accused of raping Brazilian model Najila Trindade in a hotel in the French capital in May.

Neymar has strongly denied the accusations from the start, claiming that his relations with Ms Trindade were consensual that he is being extorted.

The case has been a key talking point in Brazil and overshadowed the country's preparations for the Copa America, which the hosts went on to win.

The allegations first emerged in June, when the 27-year-old footballer released a seven-minute video on Instagram revealing he had been accused of rape.

"I'm being accused of rape," Neymar said in the video. "Yes, it is a heavy word, a very strong thing.

"What happened was totally the opposite of what they are talking and saying. I'm very upset at this moment."

Ms Trindade claimed in an interview recently that she would continue fighting the case in a bid to fight for justice.

“Can’t you be (shaken)?" she said. "I went to meet someone who wanted to get close and this ended in tragedy, feeling totally frustrated about it. All my expectations have been destroyed.

"Then I was fooled by people who just wanted to take advantage of my deplorable situation.

“Since all this has happened no one has approached to help me."

Addressing Neymar, she added:“I feel you have taken advantage of my despair, my trauma and disorientation,”

“What worries me even more how this case is treated here in Brazil – in an ignorant and inhuman way. Just because it is Neymar, who is a celebrity with purchasing power and economics, I am being suffocated.”
