Nexus says Metro passengers can use trains 'with confidence' amid coronavirus crisis

Metro passengers are being urged to continue to use the system amid the current coronavirus outbreak.

Nexus has said that passengers can use the trains "with confidence" after bosses introduced new cleaning regimes concentrating on the places most touched by users.

Extra cleaners have been taken on to make sure trains and stations are cleaned and disinfected constantly - focused on hand rails, train poles and ticket machine screens.

They say they are taking their advice from Public Health England and want to reiterate the government's advice for people to stay at home if they have a high temperature or a new and continuous cough – even if it is mild.

Huw Lewis, Customer Services Director at Nexus, said: “Passengers can continue to use Metro as normal if they need to get around Tyne and Wear.

“We are following the advice issued by Public Health England, and we have taken on extra cleaners and increased cleaning of key points around Metro to help reduce the spread of coronavirus.”

At the moment there are no advised changes to Metro operations; if services are affected in future because Nexus employees are unable to come to work they will use their website and social media to advise passengers and employers.

Metro trains and stations are all cleaned at least daily, with additional cleans throughout the day at busy locations. On-board cleaners also work on trains as they travel round the system.
