Nextbikes are adding another hub and more bikes in Swansea

A bike share scheme along the Swansea Bay seafront is finally being extended to Mumbles.

Swansea Council has given planning permission for a 20-bike hub at the slipway by Promenade Terrace - roughly halfway between Verdi's and Oyster Wharf.

The Santander-sponsored bike share scheme currently operates at Swansea University's two campuses, Fabian Way park and ride, the Civic Centre and the National Waterfront Museum.

It had always been the intention to have an extra leg to Mumbles, but pinning down a hub location has been tricky.

Previously, Oyster Wharf was identified as the best location by council officials - but the brakes were put on that idea because of legal and land ownership issues.

However, after much to-ing and fro-ing a suitable location has been found - and it is hoped it will be open on May 9.

The bike share scheme was launched last summer after the university secured £100,000 for the project from Santander via a crowdfunding campaign.

It is run by a company called nextbike, with different tariff and membership options. There were more than 2,000 rentals of the 50 bikes in the first month alone.

Nextbikes could be coming to Penarth after proving popular in Cardiff

Mumbles Community Council has contributed £13,500 to the latest bike hub.

Council chairwoman Carrie Townsend Jones said: "Mumbles Community Council are excited to implement this successful project in our beautiful village."

How to use a NEXTbike

A report by Swansea Council planning officers said it was likely that other hubs would be created in the future, and added: "As such, the proposal is considered as a next step in hopefully a much wider-reaching network."
