Nextbike installs two new Cardiff city centre stations and promise they'll 'be back soon'

Two new Nextbike stations have been installed in Cardiff, as the company promises a "stronger return" after suspending its services in the city last month.

A recent tweet from the bike rental company showed a picture of a new station being installed on Cardiff's Wood Street.

"Since our #Cardiff #VoG pause, we've been working non-stop to ensure our stronger return. We've installed new stations in Wood Street and Cardiff University - Main Building," the tweet read.

"We miss our Cardiff VoGcommunity and we'll be back soon."

The installation of the new stations comes after Nextbike said in November that it was removing its bikes from the streets of Cardiff after what it calls months of vandalism, thefts and threats to staff.

Nextbike said it is suspending the scheme until next year after more than 300 bikes were stolen and another 260 had to be scrapped because of vandalism and warned the scheme could be permanently closed.

Since November 15, the OVO bikes scheme - powered by Nextbike - has been temporarily suspended in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

It is the first time the company, which has similar schemes across the UK, has had to suspend its operation because of thefts and vandalism.

A notice on the bike sharing company's website says that the scheme has been "temporarily suspended" in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, with bike not available again until the new year.

"As many of you have noticed, a wave of vandalism and theft has hit the fleet hard over the past year, and despite our best efforts, it has left hundred of bikes either damaged, destroyed, or even underwater," the post continues.

However, the post adds: "We'll be back and we hope to see you there."

Another post on their website adds that Nextbike has paused the OVO bike service to "address the problem and reinforce our bikes so that we can provide a reliable bike sharing experience that meets our standards and gets you a bike when and where you need it."

The post goes on to thank those who helped spot stolen or vandalised bikes, and encourages those who see lost bikes to get in touch.

"It will be painful to see OVO Bikes temporarily off the streets in Cardiff and the Vale but your safety and delivering the service you expect and need are our top priorities. We hope to get through these challenges together and come out stronger on the other side," the post continues.

It encourages people to "stay tuned" for updates to Nextbike's website saying that they'll "be back."

Krysia Solheim, nextbike MD, said: "We're working hard behind the scenes to get the bikes back in the streets as soon as possible. We're still on track to relaunch the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan OVO Bikes in January next year."
