Next issue statement on planning to reopen stores in NI

Retail favourite Next has outlined plans to reopen their doors in the UK - including stores in Northern Ireland.

The fashion giant closed temporarily in March and suspended all online orders after receiving backlash for deciding to keep their warehouses opened during the  Coronavirus  pandemic.

However, orders online have since resumed and Next said they have been putting together plans to operate in a "socially distanced world".

A spokesperson said: "On Thursday, March 26, we temporarily closed our UK warehouses and distribution networks in order to adapt our operations to working safely in a Coronavirus world."

The UK retailer said it would open stores outside of large towns first - where bigger car parks made it easier to manage store access.

New measures to be put in place include screening of tills, distance marking walkways, and sanitisation stations.

They said their focus has also include how pedestrians will flow around the shop, including entrances and exits at their stores.

They added: "During the 18 days of closure we re-organised all aspects of our warehousing to ensure social distancing and improved sanitation.

"We re-organised the flow of pedestrians, adapted exits, entrances, congregation areas, rest areas and workstations. In addition, we changed our picking routines and delivery promise to smooth workflow during the day and eliminated the peaks in activity most likely to result in close contact between operatives."

In Northern Ireland, Next has stores throughout the country including Three in Belfast, two in Derry, two in Newry, and individual stores in Bangor, Newtownabbey, Omagh, Lisburn, Ballymena, Enniskillen, Cookstown Coleraine and Banbridge.

Next told Belfast Live it is currently making "broad plans" on how it might approach opening stores here, but said it would do so when the NI Executive lifted restrictions.

Meanwhile, Next also hinted that their biggest sale could be right around the corner.

They said: "The reduction in sales volumes has meant that we have a lot more stock in our warehouses than anticipated.

"Although our main July and January End of Season Sales are likely to fall outside lockdown, we believe clearing our surplus stock will prove challenging if social distancing restrictions are in force."
