Next store at Parc Trostre in Llanelli is to close because it's "no longer viable"

Next has announced that it will be closing its Llanelli store next year.

The British clothing company has said that the combination of "unsustainable rents" and "high levels of business rates" has forced it to close its branch in Parc Trostre.

The company explained that many years of sales decline have meant that the store has been unable to agree lease renewal terms that would keep the store profitable.

It will be closing its doors when the lease comes to an end on March 24, 2020.

A spokesman for Next said: "After many years of sales decline at this retail park we have been unable to agree lease renewal terms that would keep the store at a profitable level going into the future.

"The combination of unsustainable rents and high levels of business rates have made it unviable to keep the store and make a much needed reinvestment into a refurbishment.

"Much to our regret we have decided to close the store in line with the expiry of the current lease on March 24, 2020."

Lee Waters, Llanelli AM, said that he hopes a deal can be negotiated which protects staff's jobs.

He said: "I’m really concerned to hear that employees of Next in Parc Trostre have been given news of potential redundancy because of rents at the site that make the shop unviable. Being given this news just before Christmas will be a real worry for them.

"Next is one of the anchor stores that pulls in shoppers to the whole site, and losing tenants could have a real impact on the Trostre as a whole.

"So I really hope the landlords and Next are able to negotiate a deal which saves the store and protects people’s jobs."

Parc Trostre has been contacted for comment.
